Fall in New York
November 4, 2010

Highlights: Eleven Madison Park, Xian Famous Foods, Soba Nippon, Lucky Eight.  Culture Espresso – chocolate chip cookie which was gooey at the beginning of October but suddenly become small and crispy by the end of the month. Rumor is that they changed bakers — too bad!  A side note, there seems to be a fair [...]

Los Angeles I
September 4, 2010

A long weekend of enjoying sunshine and great food in Los Angeles. On the first day we made a foray into Westminster to check out the Vietnamese offerings.  Pho Thanh Lich – Pho Dac Biet Special w/ filet mignon – nice broth with a subpar clump of rice noodles.  O.k., though not great.  Duck Soup [...]

Hawaii
March 2, 2010

Hawaii Eats March 2010 KCC Farmer’s Market – bbq abalone, delicious abalone bbq’d on the half shell. One stand had – excellent kalua pork, smokey and moist without being over cooked and stringy. The vendor said that it was done traditional emu style (by burying it), it was definitely better than a lot of the [...]

NAMU**’
October 19, 2009

It seems like there’s a standard menu floating around the city: frisee salad with a poached egg, some sort of pork belly, hamburger, and pizza.  It could be the economy, an idea that city diners want to eat the same thing wherever they go, or simply lack of guts to cook from one’s own perspective.  [...]

SHIN TOE BUL YI***
January 22, 2008

A satisfying lunch of Yuke Jang at Shin Toe Bul Yi. Yuke Jang is beef brisket in a spicy soup with egg and green onions. STBY’s has great soups and stews, so I thought I’d give their Yuke Jang a try. The soup was excellent spicy with a deep beef broth base. The egg and [...]

OHGANE*’
January 11, 2008

I wasn’t very impressed with our barbeque dinner at Ohgane in Oakland. The kalbi was extremely sweet and the pork bulgogi overly sauced and not very spicy. Service was fine, but I would not order bbq here again.

TOFU VILLAGE**
September 26, 2007

Tofu Village on Irving at 20th has taken over the space that once housed the only good Taiwanese restaurant in the city. Oh well. The space is the same, though they’ve added a flat screen tv to the wall and were playing some Chinese movie with Ziyi Zhang from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Despite the [...]
